Philosophical Thoughts

This is a list of thoughts or ongoing questions I have. This list will change over time:

Question 1

Which is better?

  1. 100 years spent living a life. You see different sights; experience different things; spend some time happy, sad, excited, annoyed, etc.
  2. 100 years spent in a continuous state of maximum fulfillment/happiness/joy/excitement/whatever. You can still process the passing of time. But you do not experience any new thoughts, though you are still conscious.

In other words, option 2 is a snapshot of the best moment of option 1. And you live that one moment in time for 100 years. Which is better?

I think most people would say 1.

Question 2

Which is better?

  1. 100 years spent living a mediocre life.
  2. 100 years spent living a great 5 years over and over again. Every time the 5 years restarts, you do not keep the memories.

This is the same question as the previous question, except on a different timescale.

This has a time-scale of 5 years. Whereas the previous had a timescale of 0 (a point in time)

Question 3

This one I'm rather confident in.

Effective immortality exists. Earth is utopia. Everyone you know is also effectively immortal. The year is 500,000 AD. You have lived for almost 500,000 years. You decide that you finally want to stop existing (die).

Which is a better option?:

  1. End your life
  2. Erase all your memories

I think 2 is better.

  1. Net negative (1 person dies)
  2. Net neutral (1 person dies, 1 person made = net 0 people)

QUestion 4

Do you die and get reborn as a new person every nanosecond (or whatever super small unit of time)?

Let's take two versions of you:

  • A: You from 5 seconds ago
  • B: You right now

You no longer exist in A. You are only "conscious" in B.

(unfinsihed idea)
